Ionizing Radiation

Handling Tips

Ionizing Radiation

Alpha Radiation consists of alpha particles (helium nucleus) with an emission velocity of approx. 107 m/s. Due to its positive charge it can be deflected by electric and magnetic fields. The range of alpha particles in the air is only a few centimeters. One or two sheets of paper are sufficient to shield this radiation. Danger is restricted to contamination of the skin or to incorporation.

Beta Radiation consists of electrons having different velocities between 108 m/s and 0,999•c (c = velocity of light) and energies of approx. 0,1 MeV up to 3 MeV. Due to its negative charge it is deflected opposite to alpha particles in electric and magnetic fields. The range of beta radiation in the air is very different due to the varying energies (between 10 cm and 11 m).

Gamma Radiation or photon radiation is an electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths of approx. 10 -12  m and energies between 0,01 MeV and 10 MeV for radioactive materials. In contrast to alpha and beta radiation gamma radiation has no finite maximum range.

Handling Tips

Storage of GRAETZ Instruments

Storage temperatures acc. to the operation instructions have to be kept. The place of storage has to be dry. If the instrument is stored for a longer time, batteries have to be removed in order to avoid damage by leakage.

For at least once a year a device should be operated for example for one hour.

Cleaning the devices

Should an instrument be wet after use in rain or snow, it has to be dried at room temperature. Dirty parts have to be cleaned with a damp cloth and dried afterwards.
Contaminated devices have to be cleaned with a soft brush and a lukewarm decontamination liquid (0,5% decontamination material and alkaline cleansing agent, dissolved in water) or by using a customary mild detergent.

Please do not use organic solvents or caustic cleansing agents!

After cleaning it has to be checked, whether the instrument is free of contamination.

Disposal of your old GRAETZ Instruments

Old electric/electronic devices frequently contain worthy, but also harmful materials which have been necessary for their function.

PLEASE NOTE: Old devices do not belong to domestic waste! GRAETZ Strahlungsmeßtechnik GmbH takes your old GRAETZ device back free of charge and takes care of its correct disposal. This offer applies to devices delivered from August 2005 on.
